12th January 2018 Mt. Biking: Short two rivers, Deben to the Orwell Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny with light airs. Max Speed: 18 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 12 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Friday 12th January – Bike ***** Two River Bike Ride – sunny:) After the measurable cloud and dull weather of the last few days we woke today to light airs with wall to wall sunshine:) So after yesterdays top art visit to Colchester today was time to get the bikes out and do our shorter Two Rivers Route! Setting off just before midday we took the road to the viewing point at Landguard and it was lovely, brilliant blue sky, flat calm water with a hazy misty effect over the sea:) With the footpath damaged in last weekends high winds and big sea we had to return back past the fort entering the entrance to the reserve before riding out on the wooden walkway. With the tide low, the long beach looked great as usual. Mag and I then had a quick look on the beach for coal but were not holding much hope and on first sight there was none to be seen:( Then Mag called me over to the tide line and was amazed at the huge lump of coal Mag was standing on – it was enormous !!!! It was way too big to get home on our bikes but we just couldn’t leave it, so I broke it up as best I could, filled a bag and Mags rucksack and pockets and started back across the reserve. We soon realised it was too heavy so at the gate I stopped at the seat and Mag peddled home to get the van! I had a relaxing time watching the rabbits, robin, wren and 7 blackbirds:) With the coal safely handed over to Mag, she went home while I continued the ride. A container ship headed out and looked spooky on the misty water. Back on the prom it was busy with walkers and fishermen and the ladies in the charity beach hut including bunting were out selling teas. At the pier I walked around to take yet more pics of the red parasols, then two Stand up Paddle boarders were approaching from The Fludgers making the most of the super flat condition, we must treat ourselves to a couple of boards. They bot paddled under the pier before continuing towards the docks! I took it easy along the prom as several walkers about, up on the road and along to The Dip, past the golf course, then on reaching the River Deben it looked fantastic. With the sun low behind me, the tide low, the water like a millpool it looked like Bawdsey Manor house was floating, or like an island:) At the ferry boatyard I stopped to take several pics of the boats reflections before whizzing back along the road as we had to nip up the town – what a top day :) When I took home we weighed the coal and it went 20 kilo’s which is a record for one piece of coal and will keep us in fires for several days, nearly worth the aching backs both Mag and I have from carrying it!!!
